New construction and major additions need a dedicated fire line tap sized to the fire suppression system's demand, which is almost always larger in diameter than the domestic service. Getting that sizing wrong at the tap stage creates a supply problem for the sprinkler or standpipe system that no amount of downstream piping can fix.

What Drives Fire Line Tap Cost

Tap size is the biggest single driver, because fire flow demand usually requires a larger connection than a domestic service and larger taps mean larger sleeves, valves, and restraint hardware. Depth of the main, pavement or landscaping over the dig site, and how close the work is to other utilities all move the number as well.
