What Hydro Excavation Is
A pressurized water wand breaks up soil while a vacuum boom simultaneously lifts the resulting slurry into a debris tank. Nothing rigid or sharp contacts the ground, so buried pipe, conduit, and cable are exposed rather than struck.
The typical use is potholing, sometimes called daylighting: opening a small precise hole to confirm exactly where a line is and how deep it sits before committing to a larger excavation or a bore path.
It also produces a cleaner site. Spoil goes into a tank instead of a pile on the lawn, and the hole is narrow and vertical rather than sloped and wide.

When Hydro Excavation Is the Right Method
Hydro excavation is the right method whenever an unknown or live utility sits inside the dig zone and striking it is unacceptable. It is the standard approach to verifying a locate before a machine goes in.
It is also right when the excavation needs to be small and precise, when working around tree roots you intend to preserve, and when ground conditions are frozen or compacted enough to make conventional digging slow and rough.
It is the wrong method as the primary technique on large volume excavation. Moving a lot of material by water and vacuum is slower and costs more per cubic yard than a machine, so it belongs where precision or safety is worth that premium.
Conditions That Rule Hydro Excavation Out

- Large cobble or solid rock the water cannot cut.
- No practical way to stage the truck near the dig.

The truck is staged, surface is cut cleanly, and the water wand begins breaking soil at controlled pressure.

Slurry is drawn into the debris tank as the hole advances, exposing the line without contacting it.

Depth and position are documented for the next phase of work, then the hole is backfilled and the surface is patched.

Disruption, Timeline, and Cost Drivers
Potholing is usually a same day task measured in hours. Site disruption is small: a truck, hoses, and a hole often no more than a foot or two across.
Cost drivers are the number of holes, depth, soil conditions, water supply and slurry disposal, how long the truck is on site, and access for staging the equipment near the work.
Compared per cubic yard, hydro excavation costs more than machine digging. Compared against striking a live gas or fiber line, it is inexpensive, which is the comparison that usually matters.
