Elyria was annexed to Denver in 1890 and Swansea in 1902. EPA added the Vasquez Boulevard and I-70 site to the Superfund list in 1999 for lead and arsenic from historic smelting. Residential soil work covered more than 4,500 yards, and EPA later removed the cleaned residential areas from the Superfund list.
The former Omaha and Grant smelter is now the Denver Coliseum area and was handled as a separate part of the site. Excavation there has followed an EPA-overseen materials management plan. That does not apply to a typical house lot, but it shows why we confirm where a parcel sits before digging.
The houses are old, the lots are small, and laterals thread between rail, industry, and the interstate. Clay pipe with root intrusion and offset joints is the usual finding.
