Ground History Comes Before Pipe History
Globeville was settled in the late 1800s and annexed to Denver in 1902. It grew up around the Asarco Globe smelter, and smelting left lead and arsenic in residential soil. Cleanup of residential yards began in 1993 and 1994. Southwest Globeville was also part of the Vasquez Boulevard and I-70 Superfund residential area, where cleanup is complete.
The former Argo smelter site, northwest of the I-70 and I-25 interchange, is a separate commercial area with its own history. Residential and commercial parcels here are not interchangeable, so we confirm which one we are digging on.
Much of the housing dates from the late 1800s through the middle of the last century, so clay laterals and older water services are common, usually running short distances on small lots.
