What Clay Tile Sewer Pipe Is

Vitrified clay tile is fired ceramic pipe laid in short sections joined bell to spigot. Older joints were packed with mortar or oakum, later ones with rubber gaskets. The ceramic itself is chemically inert and resists almost everything a sewer carries.

On camera clay reads glossy and orange brown with a visible seam every two to three feet. That regular joint rhythm is the fastest way to tell clay from fiber or plastic.

Clay lines in Denver commonly reach 60 to 100 years. Most failures we find are joint failures rather than the pipe wall giving out.
