What a Collapsed Sewer Line Is

Collapse means the pipe wall has failed and the bore is closed. It may be a crushed section, a fully caved section, or a run of pipe that has broken apart and let soil fill the void.

On camera, a collapse looks like the run simply ends. The head reaches soil, broken shards, or a crushed profile and cannot pass.

How to Identify a Collapse

  • Sewage backing up into basement floor drains or the lowest tub.
  • No fixture in the building drains properly.
  • A cable or jetter hits a hard stop and will not pass.
  • Camera stops at the same distance every attempt.
  • A depression, soft spot, or sinkhole appearing in the yard above the line.

How We Diagnose It

Why Lines Collapse

Material end of life is the most common cause. Orangeburg fiber deforms and then caves. Cast iron channels through the invert. Clay cracks and shatters under load.

Soil loss is the accelerator. Once wastewater escapes a defect it washes out bedding, the pipe loses support, and the unsupported section fails under surface load.

External force finishes the job: heavy vehicles over shallow lines, nearby excavation, or root wedging that splits a section apart.
