Clay is glossy orange brown with a joint every few feet. Cast iron is grey black with rust nodules. Orangeburg is matte tar colored and layered. Concrete is grey and coarse. PVC is smooth white or green. ABS is matte black plastic. Those six cover nearly every line under a Denver property.

Identify Your Sewer Material Fast
Look at wall texture, color, and joint spacing. Clay: glazed, orange brown, joint every two to three feet. Cast iron: dark grey, rough, rusted, magnetic where exposed. Orangeburg: matte black or brown, layered, often oval. Concrete: grey, coarse, larger diameter, usually commercial or storm. PVC: smooth, white or green, long runs with few joints. ABS: matte black plastic, smooth.
Age narrows the field. Denver's oldest lines are usually clay or cast iron. Fiber pipe is in play for the postwar building boom. From the mid 1970s forward, PVC and ABS dominate.
Many properties have more than one material because sections were replaced piecemeal over the years. That is why the camera runs the full length rather than stopping at the first clear view.

- Vitrified clay: glazed ceramic, short sections, fails at joints rather than through the pipe wall.
- Cast iron: metal, scale and rust, fails by channeling as corrosion works through the wall.
- Orangeburg fiber: tar and wood fiber, deforms oval before it collapses.
- Concrete: coarse grey, larger bore, corrodes with sulfides over time.
- PVC: smooth plastic, solvent welded, failures are usually event driven rather than age driven.
- ABS: matte black plastic, common 1970s and 1980s, failures are usually event driven rather than age driven.

How We Diagnose It
Why the Material Decides Everything
Material determines which repairs are physically possible. A clay line with one bad joint is a spot repair. A fiber line with the same symptom is a replacement. Same symptom, completely different project.
Material also determines safe cleaning. Aggressive cutting is routine in clay and cast iron and destructive in softened fiber.
Finally, material sets expectations about remaining life. A 1985 PVC line with a root intrusion has decades left. A 1958 fiber line with the same intrusion does not.

- Clay: sectional spot repair, CIPP lining, or replacement.
- Cast iron: descaling, reaming, lining, or replacement.
- Orangeburg: replacement by pipe bursting or open cut.
- Concrete: jetting, lining on suitable diameters, or replacement.
- PVC and ABS: spot repair at the damaged fitting or section.

Cost Notes
Identification is an inspection cost, not a construction cost. It is the smallest line item in any sewer project and the one that keeps the rest of the budget honest.
Where no cleanout exists, access work adds a modest amount and usually pays for itself the next time the line needs service.
Sewer pipe material is the single best predictor of how a line fails and whether it can be repaired or has to be replaced. The table below covers the six materials found under Denver properties.

Lifespan entries describe how each material behaves in the ground rather than a year count, because a number without a source is not worth quoting.
