How Deep Sewer Lines Run and How Depth Is Found
A sewer lateral leaves the building below the foundation and falls continuously toward the main. In the Denver metro that usually means three to five feet at the house and six to twelve feet or more where it ties into a street main.
Depth is measured by putting a transmitting sonde in the camera head and tracking it from the surface with a locator. The locator reads both the horizontal position of the line and its depth at that point.
Marking the path on the surface is what makes an accurate repair plan possible. Without it, access points, trench length, and restoration scope are all estimates.

Why Depth Changes the Whole Project
Depth drives excavation cost more than almost anything else. Deeper trenches need wider openings, shoring, more spoil handling, and more compaction on backfill.
Depth also decides method viability. A shallow line under lawn is easy to open. A deep line under a driveway is exactly where pipe bursting or boring earns its cost.
Safety requirements scale with depth. Trenches at depth require proper protective systems, and that is a labor and equipment factor, not an optional line item.
