What Pull-In-Place Lining Is

A liner is saturated with resin, attached to a pull rope or cable already run through the pipe, and drawn into position from the far access point. A bladder inside the liner is then inflated to press it firmly against the host pipe while the resin cures.

The difference from inversion CIPP is how the liner arrives at its position. Inversion turns the liner inside out with air or water pressure as it travels. Pull-in-place moves it mechanically, then inflates it once it is where it needs to be.

That makes pull-in-place practical when you have good access at both ends, a defined run length, and a job that does not justify mobilizing a full inversion setup.

Pull-in-place is the right method when the damaged length is defined and reachable from both ends, when the host pipe is round and correctly graded, and when the run is short enough that pulling the liner into position is straightforward.

It is a good middle option between a sectional spot repair, which treats a single defect, and a full inversion liner, which treats an entire run. If the defects cover most of one segment but not the whole line, this is often the efficient answer.

It is the wrong method when there is no second access point, when the pull would drag the liner across debris or sharp offsets, or when the pipe has the same disqualifying conditions that rule out any lining: collapse, belly, or missing wall.

Most pull-in-place installations are a single day on site with the line out of service for a few hours. Excavation is usually limited to creating or exposing an access point.

Cost drivers are the length being lined, pipe diameter, cleaning and reaming needed beforehand, whether an access pit or new cleanout is required, cure method, and the number of service connections in the lined length.

On short runs this is frequently cheaper than mobilizing an inversion setup. On long runs the economics flip and inversion lining is the better value.
