## What Counts as a Septic Emergency?

Three situations warrant an immediate call. Wastewater rising into a tub, a shower pan, or a floor drain means the system has no capacity left and every fixture used makes it worse. Effluent surfacing over the tank or field means untreated wastewater is at ground level where it should never be. A tank lid that is cracked, flexing, or missing means there is an open void in the ground.

Everything else can usually wait for a scheduled visit. Slow drains, mild odour, and a pumping interval that is shortening are all real problems, but they are problems you can book rather than problems that need a truck tonight.

## What We Do First on an Emergency Call

Safety comes before diagnosis. If a lid has failed, the opening gets secured before anything else happens. If effluent is surfacing, the area gets marked off. If sewage is indoors, we tell you to stop using water immediately, because every flush adds to what has to be cleaned up.

Once the site is safe we find the cause. Camera the building sewer, open the tank, read the liquid level against the outlet invert. Emergency pumping is often part of the visit, but pumping alone on a system that refilled in days is a temporary measure and we say so rather than letting you think it was a repair.

**What should I do while I wait for you to arrive?**

Stop using water in the building entirely, including the washing machine and dishwasher. Keep people and animals away from any wet ground or open tank access. Do not attempt to lift or stand on a lid you suspect is cracked.

**Will pumping the tank fix it?**

It will relieve the backup. Whether it fixes anything depends on why the tank was full. If the outlet or the field has stopped accepting flow, the tank refills within days and pumping has bought you a short window rather than a solution.

**Is a cracked tank lid really an emergency?**

Yes. A septic tank is a buried void, and the lid is the only thing between the surface and it. A lid that flexes under weight has already begun to fail. That is a fall hazard, and it is one of the few septic problems that we treat as urgent even with no plumbing symptoms at all.

**Do you respond after hours?**

Yes. Sewage in living space and surfacing effluent do not keep business hours, and neither do we for those calls.
