# Open Cut Excavation in Denver

Open cut excavation exposes the sewer or water line by trenching so the pipe can be physically replaced, regraded, or rerouted. It is the oldest method and still the only correct one for a whole category of underground failures.

## What Open Cut Excavation Is

A trench is opened along the line, the failed pipe is removed, new pipe is laid on prepared bedding at correct grade, and the trench is backfilled in compacted lifts before the surface is restored.

Everything is visible. Bedding, slope, joints, and connections are set and inspected directly rather than inferred from a camera. On jobs where the line has to be right rather than merely functional, that visibility is the point.

Modern excavation is not the destructive spectacle people picture. Trench width is kept to what the work needs, spoil is managed, and restoration is planned before the first cut.

## When Open Cut Is the Right Method

Open cut is the right method whenever grade has to change, the line has to move, or the pipe is gone rather than merely damaged. No liner corrects slope and no bursting head follows a bore that no longer exists.

It is also frequently the cheapest correct answer on a short shallow run through open lawn, where restoration is topsoil and seed rather than concrete, brick, or mature landscaping.

It is the wrong method when the surface above the line is expensive or irreplaceable, when the line runs deep enough that shoring and spoil handling dominate the cost, or when a qualifying host pipe means trenchless would deliver the same result with far less disturbance.

## How an Excavation Job Runs

1. **Locate Everything First** Utility locates and our own line locating establish what is in the ground and where, before any machine touches soil.
2. **Open the Trench** The trench is cut to the width and depth the work requires, with shoring or benching where depth and soil conditions call for it.
3. **Replace and Grade** New pipe is laid on prepared bedding at the correct slope, connections are made, and the installation is verified visually and by inspection where required.
4. **Backfill and Restore** The trench is backfilled in compacted lifts to limit future settlement, then the surface is restored to the agreed finish.

## Disruption, Timeline, and Cost Drivers

A straightforward residential replacement is commonly one to three days on site. Disruption is real and visible along the trench line, and settlement can continue for a season if backfill is not compacted properly, which is why we compact in lifts rather than dumping spoil back in.

Cost drivers are trench length and depth, soil and rock conditions, shoring requirements, what sits on the surface above the line, utility congestion, permitting, inspection, traffic control if the work reaches the street, and the cost of restoring the finished surface.

Depth is the single largest multiplier. A line at four feet and the same line at twelve feet are not the same job even though the pipe is identical.
