## Expected Service Life

How long a line lasts depends on soil, tree cover, and installation quality more than on the material's reputation alone. A clay line in stable soil with no trees can perform for a very long time. The same clay line under a mature cottonwood in expansive soil can fail decades early.

Orangeburg is the exception where age alone tells you most of what you need to know. The material degrades chemically and mechanically on a fairly predictable schedule, which is why Denver's postwar installations are failing together now.

Denver conditions matter. Expansive clay soil, freeze thaw cycles, and heavy tree cover in older neighborhoods all pull real world life toward the low end of every range.
