# Collapsed Sewer Line

A collapsed sewer line has lost its structure. The pipe wall has failed inward and wastewater cannot pass. This is an emergency: there is no partial flow, no cleaning solution, and no safe delay.

## What a Collapsed Sewer Line Is

Collapse means the pipe wall has failed and the bore is closed. It may be a crushed section, a fully caved section, or a run of pipe that has broken apart and let soil fill the void.

On camera, a collapse looks like the run simply ends. The head reaches soil, broken shards, or a crushed profile and cannot pass.

Collapse is the final stage of a long process. Cracks, offsets, root intrusion, or material fatigue almost always came first.

- Sewage backing up into basement floor drains or the lowest tub.
- No fixture in the building drains properly.
- A cable or jetter hits a hard stop and will not pass.
- Camera stops at the same distance every attempt.
- A depression, soft spot, or sinkhole appearing in the yard above the line.
- Sewage odor outdoors along the line path.

## Why Lines Collapse

Material end of life is the most common cause. Orangeburg fiber deforms and then caves. Cast iron channels through the invert. Clay cracks and shatters under load.

Soil loss is the accelerator. Once wastewater escapes a defect it washes out bedding, the pipe loses support, and the unsupported section fails under surface load.

External force finishes the job: heavy vehicles over shallow lines, nearby excavation, or root wedging that splits a section apart.

- Open cut excavation to expose and replace the collapsed section.
- Pipe bursting where a path still exists and the collapse is limited.
- Directional boring to install a new line on a new path when the old path is unusable.
- Hydro excavation near live utilities to expose the failure safely.
- Cleaning and lining are both ruled out. There is no intact host pipe left.

## How a Collapse Response Runs

1. **Stop Use and Assess** Fixture use stops so wastewater is not pushed into a closed line, and we assess the backup risk on site.
2. **Locate the Failure Point** Camera and locating establish exactly where the line stops and how deep it sits.
3. **Excavate Safely** We expose the failure with proper shoring and utility clearance, using hydro excavation where other utilities are close.
4. **Replace, Test, Restore** New pipe is installed to grade, the connection is verified, and the site is backfilled and restored.

## What Drives Collapse Repair Cost

Depth and location dominate. A collapse under a street or driveway involves permitting, traffic control, and hard surface restoration.

Extent matters next. A single crushed section is a smaller project than a run that has broken apart along its length.

Emergency timing adds cost. This is the strongest argument for inspecting an aging line before it reaches this point.
