# Bellied Sewer Line Repair

A belly is a low spot where the line lost grade and standing water collects. Camera footage shows water sitting in the pipe with no flow. No liner corrects a belly, because a liner follows the shape of the pipe it is installed in.

- Standing water visible on camera.
- Repeat blockages in the same low spot.
- Caused by settlement or bad bedding.
- Lining does not fix grade.
- Excavation restores proper fall.

## What a Bellied Sewer Line Is

A sewer line needs continuous downhill fall, typically about a quarter inch per foot on residential lines. A belly is a section that has dropped below that line of fall, creating a dip that holds water permanently.

Solids settle in the standing water instead of being carried to the main. Over time the dip becomes a collection point that blocks no matter how often it is cleaned.

A belly is a grade problem, not a wall problem. The pipe can be in good condition and still be functionally failed.

- Camera shows standing water with the line otherwise clear.
- Blockages recur in the same location after every cleaning.
- Slow drainage that improves briefly after service, then returns.
- Line runs under an area that was backfilled, trenched, or recently loaded.
- Locate readings show a depth dip along an otherwise steady run.

## Why Bellies Form in Denver

Expansive clay soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Pipe bedded in that soil moves with it, and rigid jointed pipe cannot flex back to grade.

Poor original bedding is the second cause. Pipe laid on loose spoil rather than compacted base settles unevenly as the soil consolidates.

Leaks make bellies worse. Water escaping a joint washes out bedding and creates the void the pipe then settles into.

- Open cut excavation of the sagged section, re-bedding, and re-grading. This is the standard fix.
- Full replacement where the belly is one symptom of a line that has moved along its length.
- Directional boring to install a new line at correct grade on a new path.
- Hydro jetting as temporary relief only, since it clears debris but does not restore fall.
- Lining is ruled out. A liner takes the shape of the host pipe including the dip.

## How Belly Repair Runs

1. **Confirm and Measure** Camera work confirms standing water and locating establishes exactly where the low section starts and ends.
2. **Establish Correct Grade** We determine the required fall between the upstream and downstream connections.
3. **Expose and Re-Bed** The sagged section is exposed, the failed bedding is removed, and new compacted base is installed.
4. **Replace and Verify** Pipe is set to grade, tied in, and verified on camera with water running before backfill.

## What Drives Belly Repair Cost

Depth and length of the sagged section drive the excavation cost, and excavation is the bulk of the project.

Surface restoration matters. A belly under sod is far cheaper to correct than one under a driveway, patio, or basement slab.

If the belly is one of several grade problems, replacing the run often costs less than repeated section repairs.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can a bellied line be lined instead of dug?**

No. Lining reproduces the existing shape, so the dip and the standing water remain.

**How much of a belly is too much?**

If solids settle and blockages repeat, it matters. Depth of standing water and length of the dip both factor in.

**Will jetting fix it?**

Jetting clears what has settled and buys time. The grade problem remains until the section is re-bedded.
